This week: some scattered gear thoughts, and onebag travel.

I’ve had been intrigued by this bag — a lot of people sing it’s praises, and it looks cool. It went on sale and I watched a couple of videos to discover that there’s more than meets the eye, so I picked it up.
It’s a very odd bag, which I would describe as “bizarrely good” within the niche of onebag travel. In fact, I would guess this is among the best onebag travel backpacks out there — certainly the best I’ve ever used.

I snagged this backpack in person in Salida, CO where Oveja Negra is headquartered. There were quite a few in the store, though the website does not list this model (the staff also mentioned that they do not make many of these). This is a simple and minimal roll top backpack, and it’s killer looking.
My quick thoughts on this one…

GORUCK has not produced Shadow Rucks for a while, and it’s the one classic bag from the brand I’ve never tried. So when they recently re-released them, I grabbed a 25L Shadow Ruck to try out. I’ve been using it off and on since then, and it is a really quirky bag.
It has its place, but that place is different than how GORUCk positions the bag.

I picked this up during the deep sale that Remote Equipment ran over the holidays. I’ve been curious about the brand and have always been torn between the offerings. I went with the Charlie as it fit the capacity I am most likely to use, and I I love the way the Multicam looks on this bag.
Since picking it up, it’s been used heavily for all sorts of adventures. This is a really good bag that doesn’t have anything particularly unique about it, except that everything it does have is executed really well. That culminates in a bag I kept using, didn’t really see a need to stop using, but one which doesn’t have a huge wow factor.

I haven’t owned a soft shell jacket in a very long time, and a lot of that really is due to the fact I first wore them when they were new — and thus not that great — and I ditched them because of those compromises from the originals. There’s two types of soft shells out there: fashion (aka Finance Bro shit with company logos), and serious outdoors jackets.
I had written soft shells off completely, as I thought they were all fashion bullshit — a compromise not worth owning. But my interest was piqued again when I started reading more about the modern variants.
Then I went to try out the Gamma in person, to help a friend looking at options who lived far away from an Arc’teryx store. What I found surprised me, and a week or so later I bought the Gamma hoody for myself. It’s been one of the best purchases I have made for outdoor/hiking wear — and I wear it often.
It’s very good.

Since moving to back to an area where carrying your own tote bags for items you purchase is not only recommended, but largely assumed, I’ve been on the hunt for the best packable tote bags. There’s loads of these out there, so here’s what I am liking so far.
