I love my Meermin loafers, and there’s some good deals to be had — from boots to loafers.

Co-Hosting a New Podcast: High Twist
For those who have been waiting for my return to podcasting, your wait is over. I am co-hosting a new podcast with my good friend Bruce Layman. It’s called High Twist. Our focus is on helping men dress well, without feeling like they are dressing up everyday.
It’s been a lot of fun working on this with Bruce, and I hope you enjoy the show. Website/RSS is here, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Overcast.

Last Day of ROKA Sale
Quick count: I have four pairs of ROKA sunglasses. They all are in my car next to my drivers seat. You might be thinking “that’s overkill”, and yet what I am thinking is “could I get away with one more pair?”
These sunglasses are supremely lightweight, the lenses are excellent, and the style range is fantastic. In fact, my only complaint with ROKA, is that the Phantom XL seems discontinued before I could get a preferred style in it. (The Phantom, though, is still around.)

Malkoff Bodyguard Reflector, Fantastic Light to Pickup
The fine folks over at Kosen have a really cool Malkoff model available. It’s a standard Bodyguard light with a few changes: 519a emitter, tail shroud, and a reflector instead of an optic.
The big deal on this is the reflector. The standard Bodyguard (review here) has an optic so it is a little narrower of a beam. This reflector has a much better (IMO) beam shape, which makes it even more useful. Like I said in my review, this light is a one trick pony, but it’s a good fucking trick.
Activating the light means it always comes on at high — and it’s really bright. After 8 seconds it drops down to a light output it can sustain for a long time without heating up too fast. You are probably like: “8 seconds, too short”. But when you get this light, you will be like: “man 8 seconds is almost too long”.
I wasn’t going to post about this when they dropped, as I thought there was no way I would have time to post before they sold out. But this run must be larger than I thought. Now is your chance to get one. Malkoff doesn’t sell these directly, only Kosen does (but Malkoff still did all these changes).
And just in case you think this light is really large, it’s not. Here’s it next to a Hoku Clicky:

Soulver 3 — iPhone App Available
Soulver has long been one of my favorite little apps. I’ve been using an ancient version on my iPhone, as they never released version 3 for iPhone (only Mac and iPad).
Until now.
Soulver 3 is now available on the iPhone. It has a 30 day trial, and a one-time $14 purchase.
I’m pumped, instant buy.

GORUCK Heritage Shoulder Bag Released
At the end of last week GORUCK released their Heritage Shoulder Bag. It’s essentially the old shoulder bag from way back when but in waxed canvas. A lot of people have asked me since I posted my review years ago if I would sell them that bag (I sold it long ago, regrettably), so now’s your chance to go snag a new one for yourself. The price is pretty stellar on this too.

‘Dear men, stop dressing like trash’
Matt Ruby, writing for his newsletter:
We’re still coming to terms with all the different ways pandemic broke us. Perhaps the most unsightly: It normalized employed men dressing like trash.
His comments on SBF, basketball/football coaches. Attire in the airports. Attire in tech. It’s all so very true, and very sad. When you dress well, you feel great. Sometimes you should dress well out of respect for something: the recently deceased; the institution; or the date you want to like you. Other times you should dress well out of respect for yourself.
And dressing well doesn’t mean being uncomfortable. I know you remember it being that way, but that’s likely because the clothing didn’t fit well, or was of low quality. Dressing well also doesn’t mean spending loads of money. But, other people can help you sort that out.

Everyday Wear Ramping Back Up
I don’t want to over promise here, but Steve and I are ramping back up our writing over on Everyday Wear. A lot of smaller things going on, so if you forgot this site existed, hop on over.
I recently wrote up: Proper Cloth’s Reda Merino fabric; Relwen’s Flyweight Flex Blazer; White’s Perry Boots; and did another undershirt round up. Steve also wrote up Filson’s Draftsman chinos, which I am a big fan of as well.
We’ve got a bunch more to come. So stay tuned.
Of course, Steve and I don’t focus on fashion and style, so to cover that edge of the spectrum, I recommend A Well Worn Dispatch.

The Upgrade Shirt from Bruce Layman’s ‘A Well Worn Dispatch’
Bruce is a legend (and friend) in the Brooks Review Discord for many things, but especially for his style advice he gives us on a near daily basis. He launched a newsletter sharing this advice with his first post ‘The Upgrade Shirt’ — it is fantastic. I bought two shirts per his advice.

Setting Up Proper Note Intake via ‘Chris Notes’
Chris on his Chris Notes blog, writing about his Digital Notetaking Stack:
One of the most important parts of my setup is my intake app. I hope you’ve never had to experience this feeling:
Your friend names a cool restaurant or book for you to look up later. You hastily pull up your notes app to write it down. But wait. Where should you make the note? Does restaurant fall under your travel folder? Or your food folder? What should you title it? Do you need to make a new folder? While you’re fiddling with your app your friend has already started talking about that other boba place you should explore. Should that go in a whole other note? Oh god.
I feel like a lot of people give up after going through this a couple times and their notes app just ends up being a hodge-podge of unorganized, random shit that they dread looking back at later.
I’ve been deep into information processing tools the last few weeks. Partly because of work stuff, partly because of the overall activity in the space. Information processing is my catch all for the stack of intaking new things, making use of them/actioning, and then storing and maintaining them. Chris’ above thought on the intake being the most important part resonates with me.
So many of the tools today are just not at all simple. They are complex and overbearing. I’ve gone deep on a lot of the PKM utter-useless-nonsense out there and the offshoot tools created for it. Waste of time. Obsidian feels like that for me as well, but Chris’ use he details in the linked post seems rather sane and logical to me — dare I say, I like it.
But his system also mirrors mine in a lot of ways: paper + efficient digital tools. I’ll write more about my setup in the coming months. But give Chris’ post a read, it’s one of the best how-to/getting started guides I’ve read on this stuff.

ROKA End of Summer Sale
Some solid deals on ROKA to be had, these are my current favorite sunglasses. I am a big fan of the Phantom’s and the Hunter 2.0 models. They are impressively lightweight, and all around great.

Filson 40% Sale
A bunch of solid offerings, 40% off right now from Filson. Buying through that link helps me buy through that link and such. I love the Filson flannel shirts, and suggest everyone owns one. They run wide, I fit a Medium, X-Long perfectly, whereas generally it’s a Large most places (which also fits there, but wears a little boxy on me).

‘Daring Fireball, John Gruber, and Threads’
I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot lately, and Dmitrii ‘Mamut’ Dimandt states it well in his article ‘Daring Fireball, John Gruber, and Threads’. Essentially the question here is: why does John Gruber love Threads so much, while having a record of hating Meta’s flagrant disregard for user privacy? And it’s not because Threads is special and is super private — they literally cannot roll it out to the EU because of it breaking the privacy laws (and other reasons) there.
So, like, what the actual fuck?
